Designer Wishlist

It’s 2015, and there’s a boom in fashion everywhere you turn – the clothes are getting more fashion forward, the consumers are getting harder to please and the designers multiply by the season. Yet, there are still those handpicked few who are the dressmakers after our own hearts. Some have been around a while, some others are comparatively fresh blood, but they all leave indelible sartorial marks on us season after season, year after year. These are the guys for whose creations we pine for, dream about and have a mental wishlist we’ve already started toward ticking off.

Your designer dream list might by different (and longer) than ours, but here are some fashion mavens we just can’t get enough of and hope to score someday. After all, the wait is just as sweet as the prize itself! Tell us which designers you’re particularly gaga over.

Ellie Saab

The biggest boon of the past few decades to the red carpets, this Lebanese couturier is an all time favourite of celebrities and fashionistas all over the world. If you ask us, we’d probably close our eyes and wear an Ellie Saab to a huge event and just know that it’s going to be a major hit. With a love for fanciful detailing, opulent silhouettes, intricate and feminine embellishments and simply elegant everything, an Ellie Saab is the gown of our dreams.

With nineteenth-century eccentric aristocrat Marchesa Casiti as their muse, designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig quickly became a favourite among red carpet stunners after they were established in 2004 – everyone from Anne Hathaway, Blake Lively, Sandra Bullock and Cameron Diaz wore these sisters’ creations. Recently bringing their brand to India, they’ve answered the sartorial wishes of many Indian fashion lovers, with their fairytale like gowns and intricate cocktail dresses.

This Bengali force in the Indian fashion industry has the eye of an artist and the vision of a master. The top choice of any high-aiming Indian bride, Sabyasachi has the ability to perfectly encapsulate the essence of the country’s rich traditions and deep-rooted culture through his gorgeous bridal wear. If you’re getting married any time soon and you wish to look like the perfect Indian princess, he is your go-to man.

Zuhair Murad

Another great Lebanese gift to the fashion world, Zuhair Murad has carved a niche for himself amongst the highest ranks of couturiers. There’s no denying that he’s a definite red carpet staple of the stars, standing alongside contemporary giants. His touchstones are immense detailing, sophisticated hand embroidery and sensual see-through designs whose fans are counted in Jennifer Aniston, Miley Cyrus and Rachel McAdams, among many others. Those sheer, nude-skinned body hugging silhouettes embellished with extravagant crystals that Beyonce and JLo are always wearing? That would be Murad.

Gaurav Gupta

Gaurav Gupta’s trademark style is rife with fantasy and magic realism. With his designs being worn by tons of Indian leading ladies like Deepika Padukone, Shraddha Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, and donned by Hofit Golan at Cannes and Lady Victoria Hervey at the Golden Globes – this man’s truly gone international. His clothes are every bit edgy, and equally glamorous, with opulent draping and fabric play – chic and wearable.

Ashish Gupta

Since his first show at London Fashion Week in 2014, Ashish Gupta has dressed up high profile clients like Madonna, Victoria Beckham and Miley Cyrus. With a mix of Eastern and Western influences, this St.Martins graduate has a signature love for sequins. His eponymous label has every item made in India with a style blend of sportswear, hi-end glamour and craftsmanship. Having collaborated with Topshop and selling his collections all over the world, this London-dweller has truly stolen our hearts with his beautiful clothes.
